Establishing a Positive Classroom Climate

Establishing a Positive Classroom Climate

I would create a positive classroom climate by using several methods, because establishing a great learning environment definitely improves their learning abilities.  I would focus on young learners, grade 1 at my school.

1.      Create a set of rules and code of conduct to follow
-          Establishing a set of rules and having the student understand them really helps the way students’ behavior in class.  The class can agree and understand together what are positive and negative behaviours, and also ask students how they would like to be treated in class.  For young learners, the assistant teacher and I can model some scenarios and discuss what are positive and negative behaviours.
2.      Create a safe and stimulating learning environment
-          Have chairs and tables without any sharp edges, cabinets and drawers with child proof locks, nontoxic stationary items, plastic scissors, etc.  Design the classroom with colourful background, and have props and posters related to the unit topic placed around the classroom.  Have a small reading area, a tech area, a writing area, and a play area for students.
3.       Be a role model
-          Teachers are very important to students, because of the length of time spent in the classroom all year.  Teachers should always be positive and express a confident aura towards the students.  Always care and support the students, and when teachers learn to trust students, they will believe in their teachers.  Regardless of ethnicity, age, skill level, and gender, teachers should always have the same standard of respect and understanding towards all students in class.
4.      Take serious situations outside
-          It is not a good idea to have a confrontation with a student in front of other students.  It may lead to negative thoughts and feelings.  Pull the student aside or outside and have the conversation there.  If an extreme situation happens, stay calm, understand the root of the problem, be firm with your tone of voice, and be professional.
5.      Praise positive behaviours and achievements
-          It is always a good feeling when students are praised by their teachers for their hard work.  Teachers can use classdojo.com to maintain classroom management.  Create a reward system for good behavior and hard work, and give stickers, tokens, and gifts as a little reminder for their achievements.
6.      Be fair
-          Be equal and fair to all students.  Know your students, their likes and dislikes, and their skill level.  Respect their ethnicity, gender, learning capabilities, and their space.  Be a teacher with a wonderful heart that cares for the students.
7.      Relevant lesson plans
-          Teachers should have learning materials and lesson plans relevant for the students.  Have class activities interesting and that students can relate to in real life.  More interaction and collaborating with other students in group activities also works well.
